Police in Kill Devil Hills, South Carolina have just arrested several people associated with a crime family for running gambling- related activities. The police officers recovered close to $90,000, and a pound of marijuana during last week’s February 8th raid on one of the crime family members’ homes. The police arrested Steven K. Bansal, a 31- year old member of the Bansal crime family. The arrest took place at Bansal’s Veelee Drive home in Devil Hill, South Carolina. They also arrested, in simultaneous raids, seven other individuals, and seized a total of more than $2 million in cash and close to $1 million in jewelry. Two of the other individuals arrested on illegal gambling ring charges were Steven K. Bansal’s father, Raj K. Bansal, who is 59, and his brother Nicholas K. Bansal. The arrests were the culmination of an investigation called “Operation Underdog,” which took place over the past two years. The investigation was carried out through the cooperation of hundreds of police officers in the following counties, which range over three different states: Fairfax, Prince William, Arlington and Stafford, Virginia, Frederick County, Maryland and Kill Devil Hills, South Carolina. Police officials said that they are still analyzing their records to investigate the possibility of other partners of the Bansal family’s illegal gambling operations. "With the use of ledgers and record books, we are investigating the possibility of other individuals that were involved with Bansal and illegal gambling here in Dare County," said Police Lieutenant Jim Mulford. Steven Bansal will face the juries of several counties: he is to be charged with illegal sports gambling, racketeering, and drug dealing in Dare County, and with conspiracy to run illegal gambling, running illegal gambling, money laundering, conspiracy to launder money, and racketeering in Fairfax County. Although Steven Bansal, nor any of his alleged associates, has been charged with a violent crime, the police investigations have said that there is evidence of some brutality. The investigation began after police investigators in the Fairfax County Organized Crime and Narcotics Division discovered that the Bansal crime family had been running an illegal sports gambling ring. The operation had hundreds of clients and took in millions of dollars. The debts of some of the clients, said police investigators, were sometimes in the tens of millions of dollars. The operation to uncover the extent of the Bansal family’s gambling operations involved more than 25 search warrants on homes, business, and banking institutions, rendering it the largest ever in Fairfax County. "I don't think we've dealt with an operation quite this large before," said Fairfax Commonwealth's Attorney Robert F. Horan Jr. "I don't recall any [that were bigger] in the past 39 years," he said. In addition to their sports and other gambling- related crimes, the police said that the Bansal crime family was also involved in drug dealing.
